Chivalry in Islam
Apr. 5th, 2011 06:10 pmI am iffy on Suhaib Webb. And this khutbah has iffy moments also BUT, he makes lots of good points.
And if you've ever spoken to me? He talks just like me-- interspersing slang in his Islam, using various Black dialects-- he explains that his mom would've gone upside his grill.
The khutbah is about the false ideals for men-- he explains the Islamic source for men showing emotion, being kind, showing love and how that is what "manliness" is about.
It's in three short sections (the whole thing is only 37 minutes)-- so check it out if you're into gender norms and you want to hear what a man sounds like when he talks like me.

And then he talks about masculinity as a signifier of goodness-- i.e. if a woman does something upright or noble, she's masculine. I call bullshit on that. If a woman is upright or noble she's upright or noble. There's no need for some wack ass dichotomy saying masculine is teh awesome!111! because what does that make feminine?
Anyway, he does this all the time. I wonder if some of the infatuation with him isn't related to the blueness of his eyes-- because frankly, when he makes good points? They've been made by wiser, smarter imams and scholars but the rabid fangirling is much less pronounced.
